Akitakata is a fascinating city brimming with history and tradition, seasonal flowers, and sport.
Visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, while tinted leaves and pear picking in fall. The ancient theatrical dance of kagura is still practiced in the city.
Akitakata has two nationally designated important intangible folk cultural properties, the Aki-no-hayashida and Ozuchiyama-dengaku folk dances, which take place in the rice fields in late May and early June, respectively. During these celebrations, the local farmers shout out to each other and play musical instruments while replanting their rice seedlings.
