Hatsukaichi is a city dotted with prestigious shrines and temples, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima.
Visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms, driving, and hiking in spring; sea bathing and sea kayaking in summer; leaf viewing and chestnut and pear harvesting in fall; and skiing and snowboarding in winter--so there's lots to do all year round.
There are also plenty of specialty products, such as momiji manju (maple leaf-shaped buns filled with red bean paste), kendama (ball-and-cup toy), Miyajima shakushi (rice scoops), mouth-watering seafood, and farm produce.
