Hirao is a town made up of two areas, a hilly area around Mount Oboshiyama and Mount Minoyama and a flat lowland area around the Hirao plains.
The Oboshiyama observation deck offers breathtaking panoramic views of the islands and wind turbines dotted throughout the Seto Inland Sea.
The town retains the old Horikawa Nanban Gutter, built 400 years ago using technology from the Netherlands and used to drain landside water during heavy rain.
Hirao also has a large number of kofun (megalithic tombs), including Shiratori Kofun, which was built about 1500 years ago.
