Kumano lies on a plateau, 220 meters above sea level.
The town has long flourished as a producer of calligraphy brushes (fude) and has earned a reputation as the "brush capital" of Japan.
At Fudenosato Kobo, visitors are introduced to the history of letters and the various arts and cultures born from the calligraphy brush. The center holds hands-on workshops on brush making and calligraphy. There are also 1500 kinds of brushes on sale in the shop.
