Itsukushima Shrine

This architectural beauty, the epitome of majesty and splendor, combines the bold, unique construction over the sea with the quintessence of Heian Period palatial architecture. It has a stately bearing befitting its place as one of Japan's preeminent shrines. It was built in its current form in the 12th Century by Taira no Kiyomori, and its contrast with the verdant backdrop is particularly beautiful. It was registered as a world heritage in 1996.
