The most important step in making a calligraphy brush is choosing the bristles, blending them according to quality.
The craftsmen who make Kumano brushes use their eye and sense of touch, both trained over years of experience, to create each brush with the greatest of care.
It takes twelve steps to make a calligraphy brush. Visitors can try their hands at two of them: wrapping the koromoge cladding bristles or the finishing step.
1. Koromoge Wrapping Course
The hokubi, or bristles, are created by wrapping high-quality koromoge bristles around the core bristles, which are of lesser quality.
You will wrap these cladding bristles around the core bristles to form the brush.
2. Finishing Course
Apply paste to the completed hokubi (bristles part) to stiffen them, then wrap thread around them to form a pointed shape.
If you make a reservation one week in advance, we can engrave your name on the handle of the brush that you made by experience.
Reservation is necessary for 5 or more persons.
